On vehicle intervention

(Image from Wikipedia)

At the second day of the Tylösand seminar there was a great analogy made by a gentleman from Volvo in regards to taking control from the driver in modern active safety systems. We are more or less aiming at functionality similar to that found in a good old horse-drawn cart.

The horse will allow the driver to steer it wherever he wants to go, however it will intervene if the driver tries to do something suicidal like driving off a cliff or into a rock wall. This is actually an excellent way of explaining what these systems are about, especially to people who argue that such systems will "take all the fun out of driving".
